Chapter 7

Counter-attack

When we walked in to Misha’s flat, a man was sitting at the kitchen table, smoking. There was a gun on the table in front of him. As we came in he jumped to his feet, the gun in his hand.

“It’s OK, Max,” said Misha. “It’s only us.” He turned to me. “You know my brother, don’t you?”

Of course I knew Max. Everyone in our street knew Max. We knew that he was one of our soldiers in the woods.

“Max has brought us some food,” said Misha. “More potatoes!”

“But how did you get here?” I asked Max. “If the Germans catch you –”

“We have ways of getting into the city,” said Max. “It’s getting out that’s hard. The German patrols are everywhere.”

“Max is here for the football,” said Misha.

“Football?” I was confused. “Have you come to watch FC Start?”

“Start have a re-match with the air-force team tomorrow,” said Max. “Lots of top Nazis are going to be in the city for the game. We are going to blow up the hotel where they are staying. We’ll show the Nazis that they haven’t beaten us yet. We can still fight!”

I was scared. Every time our soldiers killed a German soldier, the Nazis shot a hundred people. Not long ago, our soldiers cut some phone cables, and the Nazis shot four hundred men.

But what else could we do? The Nazis were going to kill us all anyway.
